Crushed Dream

Update below!
_______________________
I found out that I did not get accepted into the NYC Half Marathon through the lottery process. Or, I should say, I had a nightmare about not getting in and I woke up and checked the computer, which confirmed that I did not, in fact, get in.

I’m pretty crushed about this for a number of reasons, the main one being that this race takes place on my birthday, March 21. When will that ever happen again??! A new, ambitious distance to conquer ON my actual birthday? And I just started running back in June, so a half marathon on the start of a new year for myself would really set the stage for the year to come. Plus, how pumped would you be for a race before and during it if it was your birthday! It would have been a really cool start to a new year.

The other big reason I am upset is because I am on the fence about surgery. I haven’t made any decisions and won’t until I am 100% sure. But, if I do have surgery in April as I had originally planned, it might not be possible for me to run a half marathon anymore.  I’d really like to accomplish this goal before then.

I had selected April as a tentative time for surgery for a number of reasons, most importantly because my position at work is ending on March 31. It just made sense to do this when I don’t have to take a month of work off. However, if I were to find a new job within the next couple months, I would change my plans.

But again, I am not 100% sure I am even doing the surgery. I still have doubts.

I know there are other half marathons. I am considering abandoning the surgery idea and doing the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half Marathon in April.  But I am not ready to commit yet without knowing what is going on with my medical situation. And if I sign up, it would be making a decision on surgery before I am ready. But I am considering it. Strongly…

And I have been toying with the idea of guaranteed NYC Half Marathon entry by running for a charity. While this is of course a wonderful thing to do, I am not sure about this either because I would have to raise at least $1,000 depending on which charity I choose, and I don’t know if I can do that. Do you have any good ideas for fundraising? I’m not one to organize any type of blogger bake sale, but I would be interested in hearing any other ideas you have. If $1,000 can seem attainable and not a big scary number, I might do it. But I’d have to decide soon because I need to train.

Maybe I am overreacting or being dramatic. This is just a race, after all. There are much more important things to worry about; I do realize that.  It is also 5:05 am right now so maybe I just need to sleep and wake up and I will feel better. But for now, please let me know what you think about me running for a charity.

Thanks blogworld.

    Hugs.

First, if you really want it 1,000.00 will come your way. I promise this.

Second, have you seen a naturopath abt. your situation?

    Third, you’re up early woman.

Hope you have a good day. I hate being disappointed..now it’s up to you to do something with it. 🙂

Ugh that sucks. I am sorry. If you really want to do it, do the charity thing. You could do some kind of auction on the blog (not a bake sale) like Angela did awhile back. I guess that still requires coordination, but I am sure it will pay off.

Agreed, I was going to say an auction. That way its lots of small “donations”, the donor can feel good that they gave but also they are also motivated that they might win something too!

Sounds like you really have your heart set on this race, so go for it! My stepdad really wanted to do the Marine Corps race, but by the time he got clearance from his doctor it was full. So he ran for a charity, it was easier than he thought to raise the money.

So sorry to hear you didnt get accepted to the NYC Half. If it makes you feel any better, I didn’t get accepted either!

I know this is all difficult for you to decide. But I would definitely consider running the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half Marathon or teaming up to do something for charity for guaranteed entry into the half! I would totally be down to run for charity. 🙂

    I’m so sorry 🙁
If you really want to do it, I agree with other commenters that you should do some sort of auction or if you can make jewelry or tshirts that people can buy?
I’m also sorry you’re having second thoughts about the surgery, but you need to do what’s right for you.
    Keep ya head up girl!

I say do the charity thing – I think you could certainly get to $1,000. I think the amount needed for the full marathon is absurd, but the half doesn’t sound too bad. As I mentioned, I didn’t get in either – sadness. But I’ve got my January half marathon and I’m signed up for the More Half Marathon, so I’m okay with it. Three half marathons in 4 months might have been a bit much for me anyway. Goodluck with your half marathon decision and surgery decision.

Ahh sorry you didn’t get in. I definitely think you could raise $1000 through an auction or bake sale. It is worth a shot!

Sorry to hear about your marathon issues – and the surgery too, but glad to hear that you’ve found a charity and signed up with them. I am looking forward to hearing the details.

Raising a thousand dollars sounds like a daunting tasks but with all your friends, blogger, followers, I am sure you’ll be able to rangle up the money. You could ask all of your followers to donate $2 and then you’d be just about there.

Good luck with it all and let me know if I can help

That is SO exciting – congratulations! You absolutely deserve to do this race. The timing of everything…it just sounds like it was meant for you. I can’t wait to hear more details about the charity you chose!

So, I randomly looked up the phrase “box social” to see what it was about, and I actually think you should have one!

It’s an old-fashioned version of a date auction. You get a group of women (or men) together and each one makes a boxed lunch or dinner (lunch/dinner boxes can also be decorated). Then you auction the meals off to a different group, with the understanding that the meal-maker shares the meal with the winning bidder. It’s kind of like a bachelor(ette) auction, but without the weird overtones.

You can ask friends, coworkers, etc.,…why not? It’s for charity 🙂

eeeeekkkk….I am so excited for you!

I frequently get emails from people who ask for support raising money – it’s totally okay for you to do that Dori! Parents bring Girl Scout Cookie Order Forms to the office, why can’t you do it too! It’s not like your putting the money in your pocket!

I am going to start training for a local marathon and I am using a program developed by Marrius Bakken. It’s a really good system, I am just throwing it out there for those who are interested in a good system.
