Happy Fourth of July! Hope you all enjoyed your long weekends. I enjoyed mine, although I had to work a little each day, especially on Monday. For some reason I have to work over every long holiday weekend — what is up with that?! I did get to spend a good amount of time out in the sun, so being sun-tired combined with stressed from work means Tuesday blags is late tonight. But worth it.
As you might know I’ve tried Blueprint Cleanse twice and Organic Avenue once. What I haven’t had a chance to discuss yet is that last month I tried the new kid in town in the world of the juice fast — Cooler Cleanse. A collaboration between Salma Hayek and Eric Helms (founder of Juice Generation in NYC), Cooler Cleanse officially launched earlier this year. Their history, from their website:
Since 1999, Eric Helms, founder of Juice Generation, has offered the ultimate juicing experience in New York City. In 2008, he received a very specific challenge from friend and fellow juicing devotee Salma Hayek. She asked him to custom-blend the perfect detoxifying drinks: raw, nutrition-packed juices that would improve her cleanses to make them as effective—and enjoyable—as possible.
Using his top-of-the-line hydraulic press, Eric created a rich array of nutritious concoctions from organic, sustainably grown produce. Salma taste-tested and reviewed them all. The process took months as what started as a friendly challenge evolved into a dynamic collaboration to create their dream line-up of detox drinks.
The result of their efforts is a cleansing program that is easy to accomplish, ultra-fresh and absolutely delicious. To complete the cleansing experience, they worked with some of the best nutritionists and vegan chefs in Manhattan to develop additional raw-food menus, always using the premium-grade ingredients on which Eric built the success of his stores.
So it sounds great, but Blueprint Cleanse also sounded great and well, I really disliked their green juice. I drink green juice every day but BPC’s was just too sickly sweet. I think it is the apple. Organic Avenue was okay but the delivery was annoying and expensive. I was excited to try Cooler Cleanse to see if it was any better, since it is very helpful to me to have a juice fast that I like because of my GI illness.
Even though my stomach has been feeling much better than the last few years, sometimes I still feel really badly. A  juice fast helps get me on track again. In fact, right before I had four months of feeling almost completely better, I did a juice fast. I really believe it is a good tool for resetting and getting back on track to a better stomach and healthier habits.
For those of you not familiar, the hydraulic press used to make these juices retains the most vitamins, minerals and enzymes so you are essentially drinking vitamins and nutrition and health and rainbows and unicorns. Drinking your meals also gives your digestive system a break so your body can use less energy digesting and more energy absorbing nutrients and healing. Check out the reasons you might want to try a juice fast.
While on a juice fast, you will miss the act of eating but you will probably not feel hungry. There are SO many vegetables in these juices and they are just so filling. Sometimes I am not able to finish a whole day. I do recommend getting the advice of a professional before starting any cleanse and following the instructions on easing into the fast — and out of it. And please read the SIX BIG QUESTIONS, which has valuable information on who should — and shouldn’t — cleanse.
So last month I checked out the Cooler Cleanse website and decided that instead of the standard 3-Day Cooler Cleanse, I would instead go with something I thought was a fantastic idea — the Custom Cooler. In the Custom Cooler, you can choose exactly which juices you want from their menu. If it is your first time cleansing, I would absolutely recommend going with their 3-Day Cooler Cleanse because the juices (and the order) are carefully selected for the purpose of, well, cleansing. In my case, I’ve been around the juice fast block a few times and I know what I like and I know what I need for my specific stomach problems. And that is why I ordered three days worth of Custom Cooler.
Before I go on I just want to say that I receieved no discount or free cleanse to try. I paid in full because I wanted to try this out.
And . . . I loved it.
Seriously, their Essential Green juice. SO GOOD. Like real green juice. Not sickly sweet or overwhelming or very veggie-tasting even. I read that Salma Hayek went through many green juice taste trials before they perfected their green juice recipe. (The secret ingredient is pear!) I also tried some other juices from their menu.
I really loved the Pineapple & Ginger juice. I drank it on my first of three days and wished I had ordered it for all three. But then I also loved the fruit juices I ordered for the other two days — the Pineapple Mint and Waterlemon Lime. Uh, yeah, how could I not? The Essential Red was all right, not my favorite. I tried the Almond Milk and the Brazil Nut Milk. Both were good and sweetened with dates only, so they weren’t as sweet as other cleanse’s  nut milks I’ve tried on cleanses that contain agave. There is a debate going on about whether agave is good or bad for you so it was nice to avoid that whole issue and stick with a true natural sweetener. That said, these nut milks really are not as sweet as you might be used to, so prepare yourself. While they were a great treat at the end of a long fast day, the “dessert” feeling was a little lost. But I still thoroughly looked forward to and enjoyed the nut milks.
Would I do Cooler Cleanse again? Definitely. Would I choose them over their competitors? Yep.
I really enjoyed their juices, the convenience of their delivery and the fact that they offer a Custom Cooler ($60/day — but think about buying a few margaritas and dinner!).The typical 3-Day Cooler Cleanse ($58/day) contains six juices a day. This is the sample menu. They also have a 5-Day Cooler Cleanse for the more ambitious of you and a Raw Cooler ($62/day), which delivers a full day of delicious raw-food meals and drinks. And if you do the Raw Cooler you get SMOOTHIES. They look so good. You can read about the different types of cleanses here.

July 6, 2010 at 10:58 pm (14 years ago)I deserve to win because I’ve been taking REALLY good care of myself lately and have been really, really wanting to do a cleanse to just top it all off (that’s why I Tweeted about juicers)! I actually don’t need a detox from my benders…I want a reward for being good!! 🙂
I would be sooo excited to win this one!

July 6, 2010 at 11:06 pm (14 years ago)can i say that i deserve to win this cleanse cause i just got laid off today, and need to undo the effects of the dominos pizza i ate for dinner as a result? i’ve been wanting to try a juice cleanse forever, but never could really justify the cost, and that is certainly the case now.

July 6, 2010 at 11:08 pm (14 years ago)I want to win so badly because like Dori, I have some GI issues and most foods, especially gluten, irritate my system… I am extremely health and fitness oriented, as I had a brain tumor when I was younger and was forced to be prematurely conscious of nutrition/health concerns.
I was also extremely depleted of nutrients because my intestines were not absorbing properly- found this out via blood tests.
I have been interested in the Blue Print Cleanse for awhile but this looks much better; I believe that it would be an ideal way for me to rid my system of toxins so that I can heal my body more effectively and better absorb nutrients.

July 7, 2010 at 6:36 am (14 years ago)I have never tried a juice cleanse and have always been interested. I am a bridesmaid for my friend’s wedding in Sept. and I want to look great. This would be a great way to jumpstart my eating clean plan for that!

July 7, 2010 at 8:54 am (14 years ago)Thanks Dori for bring this to my attention! I have been seeing a nutrionist since 2006 and she has helped me through some tough tummy times. But not only does her advisement help my tummy but also helps me get through my daily activities. Social outings were an issue as well as getting up and pushing through a day of work. Then my son came a long and it was ever more important to get healthy so I can run along with him. I haven’t been able to sustain the cost of a nutrionist however I do take vitamins and probitics to help with my issues. I would love to try the cooler cleanse as those summer mojitos are hittng me hard and I need to keep on track!

July 7, 2010 at 9:09 am (14 years ago)I deserve to win because I feel like I need to prove to myself that I do not need to be chewing and snacking every minute of the day. I think it would test my willpower and would help me with intuitive eating. I also have a gum addiction but the artificial sweeteners really bother my stomach. I need something where for 3 days I won’t be able to chew gum. I want to completely cut out the artificial sweeteners from my diet. Maybe seeing how great my tummy feels during the cleanse will be the push I need. I’ve been wanting to try a cleanse for almost a year now but couldn’t afford it.

July 7, 2010 at 10:55 am (14 years ago)Great post! I’ve been really interested in cleanses for some time and even tried BPC a few weeks ago. While I loved the way I felt during and after, the juices weren’t as palatable as I hoped. I’d love to try another type of cleanse to see if there is a better brand/regimen for me.
To be honest, I don’t have any specific health issues that might require a cleanse, but I feel that cleansing is a good way to reset your system. Even though I try to eat healthy, I know some of my foods have preservatives, pesticides, hormones and other artificial ingredients. I think its necessary to rid your body of these toxic additives to maintain good health.

July 7, 2010 at 11:00 am (14 years ago)I deserve to win because…. well I could probably afford to pay for it, but I never would. You know why? Because I’m such a prude who would never be so adventurous to try something so unlike me. I mean, give up food for 3 days? What would I do without my processed carbs for 3 days? I would never volunteer myself for such a torture. HOWEVER, if I were to win and all these juices magically landed on my doorstep, well I’ll have no choice but to chug those babies down, won’t I?

July 7, 2010 at 11:03 am (14 years ago)I’d love to win because I’ve been working so hard to lose weight and lately have really plateaued 🙁 I’ve been thinking of doing a cleanse to kickstart my weight loss efforts again but can’t afford to buy it! The Cooler Cleanse looks awesome and I just know it will do me good!!

July 7, 2010 at 7:38 pm (14 years ago)I would love to be selected to try this cleanse. I’ve been in a funk for the past few months: physically, emotionally, mentally. I need a fresh start and what better way than cleansing the body of all the negative toxins. I want to believe in myself again. I want to live again. And sometimes you need a good kick in the pants or a “clean slate” moment to do that. It sounds silly, but I think if I can do this cleanse, I can do anything.

July 7, 2010 at 10:24 pm (14 years ago)Dori, best giveaway everrrr 🙂 I would love to get this cleanse because although I am so psyched to be an ‘up and coming bride’, the stress has really gotten to me. For the first time in my life I have been getting sick to my stomach lately ( A LOT…i’ll spare you details) and really feel like my system needs to ‘reboot’. I know you had such success with cleanses for your stomach issues, hopefully it could do the same for me.
XOXO

July 7, 2010 at 11:10 pm (14 years ago)Great giveaway! I just commented on Facebook and would really love to win this giveaway. I’ve never completed a cleanse before but know that this would be a great way to reward my system and body for all it’s hard work! It deserves a rest so it can recover and energize before full fledge marathon training!

July 8, 2010 at 9:15 am (14 years ago)I have lost 68 pounds over the last 17 months and I’m down to the last 10. It has been a long road and I have totally changed my lifestyle. I think a cleanse would really help push me through and achieve my goal. Thanks for the chance to win.

July 8, 2010 at 10:07 am (14 years ago)I recently was gifted an insane juicer and just this am had my favorite blend: apples, carrots and celery. Big fan of juicing, it tastes good, is healthy and it is fun to use.

July 8, 2010 at 10:36 pm (14 years ago)I would like to win this cleanse because I’ve been in a major funk, both physically and mentally. I have a really disordered relationship with food, some days I don’t eat, other days I binge. I’ve heard that these cleanses help you work through your relationship with food because it changes the entire process of how you intake nutrients. No Meat Athlete tried to do a cleanse and talked on his blog a lot about how food is an emotional crutch and the cleanse sort of separates you from that, I would love to use this cleanse to help me break free of my destructive pattern and see how it affects me physically and mentally!

July 8, 2010 at 11:03 pm (14 years ago)I would love do this cleanse! As a recent college grad, I feel like I need a restart button on my lifestyle… too much partying after graduation and summer free before grad school, I definitely need to get my body on track. Not only by eating right, but by starting to work out on a better schedule. I am starting law school in the fall, and would love for my body to be healthy and happy before the stress begins. A cleanse like this would be a great kick-start to this. I don’t want the next three years to be like undergrad health-wise. In addition, a recent diagnosis of IBS has made me realize even further the need to put the right nutrients into my body and cut out the heavy, fried diet I have been consuming.

July 9, 2010 at 5:48 am (14 years ago)I have been wanting to try this cleanse since moving to NYC years ago, not only to detox from this urban environment, but also because I am a medical student in pediatrics I need a quick & easy way to get healthy despite late nights and hospital food. It’s not good to feel sluggish when working with sick kids and I’ve heard this cleanse is energizing and gives you and awesome jump-start to get back on track with a healthy lifestyle. Since taking the boards and doing my clinical rotations I’ve compromised a lot about my diet, exercising and sleep and I think this would be a great way to feel vibrant again while pursing my dream job!

July 9, 2010 at 12:05 pm (14 years ago)I would love to try the Cooler Cleanse – I’ve never tried a Cleanse before. I am sick of eating the greasy food and I need something to jump start my weight loss and this is a perfect motivator for me.
Elizabeth
July 9, 2010 at 1:15 pm (14 years ago)Thank you! I’d like to try it because I agree with your assessment of Blue Print. And, I think a cleanse is the perfect mid-summer break, especially after all of the extra margaritas and burgers.
Katherine
July 9, 2010 at 11:34 pm (14 years ago)I would like to try the cleanse because it would be an experience for someone who never ever went on a juicing diet or clung onto raw foods at all. I may love exercise and healthy choices but sometimes I get RAW temptations and would like to branch off into a new system that would help reset my body’s internal ticking clock. I need the jumpstarter to this car, and the Cleanse would be the juice to do so!
Laura
July 10, 2010 at 8:33 am (14 years ago)I am a veteran cleanser, and really believe in its power to heal and reset the system, but I’ve never tried Cooler Cleanse. Partly, I just don’t have the $$$ to spend at the moment, but partly it’s hard to commit without knowing the product. A cleanse is a touchy time to try a new product, what with the fact that it’s all you’re consuming for a few day! But I love the idea that you can pick all your own juices if you want, and not have to muscle through the ones that don’t suit. Hook me up!
Melissa
July 10, 2010 at 10:13 am (14 years ago)oooh – yes, please! I’d love to try this!

July 11, 2010 at 6:19 pm (14 years ago)I lost about 30lbs two years ago, going from morbidly obese to “overweight.” Lately, I’ve found myself slipping back into bad habits and the pounds have started creeping back up rather than going downward as I had hoped. I need to recharge, reset and renew my passion for health and find the clarity to really find the root of my food issues and tackle them. A juice fast is just the way to do that, allowing my mind and body to pause, reflect and start anew!

July 11, 2010 at 8:07 pm (14 years ago)I would like to do this cleanse because I live between two of the wildest, most chaotic cities in the world–NYC and Beijing, China, and the effects have started to take their toll. I feel tired from traveling and don’t always put the right foods in my body. I would use this cleanse to get back in touch with my stomach, my body, and my mind. I believe that starting out with juice in its purest form–raw fruits and vegetables–has got to be one of the best ways to do it.
Nora
July 11, 2010 at 9:02 pm (14 years ago)I’d like to try this cleanse, because I have tried juice fasts to help alleviate GI problems as well and had a less than positive experience with BPC. Thanks for the informative review of Cooler Cleanse!

July 11, 2010 at 9:28 pm (14 years ago)I would LOVE a break from making my own juices and have the luxury of drinking some delicious (I trust Dori’s picky taste) and seriously convenient juices and mylks!! I would feel so lucky to win this!

July 12, 2010 at 9:04 am (14 years ago)I need this cleanse to help get myself back on track. I’m staying with my mom in Florida for the month of July and am surrounded by Costco cakes (kill me now, I don’t even like them until after midnight when my defenses are low) and early bird specials (cause we all need a free dessert). I’m stopping at the local Whole Foods today to try and get healthy stuff in this place but it’s a constant battle, and a cleanse seems so perfect and so needed.
Thanks to FreeFoods NYC, I love juices and at home sometimes make my own. But, I find I fail when I try to do it all on my own. This cleanse, all ready and waiting and, from what you said, delicious, would be a great beginning to my journey towards better health and fitness.

July 12, 2010 at 1:19 pm (14 years ago)I realized how good it felt to cut out certain foods when I went on a week long diet so I could fit nicely into my bridesmaid dress (It was hard as I love to eat but it worked! The zipper went up w/o struggle!). I’ve also felt that I’ve been been wanting (needing?) to cleanse ever since I went to my first LA Boxing class last week and I felt so heavy, I could hardly keep up (A free chance to try CC would be great since I just paid a small fortune for my LA Boxing membership). I looked into Master Cleanse and quite frankly, I’m scared. However, CC sounds like something I can tolerate and… might even like (love?)! Additionally, my family and I spent some time “bonding” on Friday night in DC and I ended up w/a $180 bar tab. To myself. That? Needs to be out of my body, for sure. Thanks for you consideration! xoxo

July 12, 2010 at 1:41 pm (14 years ago)Where to start?! I have been really curious about the Cooler Cleanse for some time, after hearing about the company from several friends (and okay, I’ll admit it, reading about it in magazines as a celeb favorite!) I’ve been intrigued, dying for more info… and yes, hoping to try it very soon myself. I’m really excited to see such an in depth, honest and super-validating review! Thank you for all great info and detail – it’s really very helpful to know what I can expect (like, love and not love) before diving in and trying the cleanse. The Cooler Cleanse just sounds like a great option for all folks, both cleanse-veterans and like myself, cleanse-novices (aka it tastes good and is simple to follow – WITHOUT sacrificing the hard core health and nutrition benefits.) Many of the cleanses out there are either intimidating/downright inedible OR on the flip side they are easy to follow & swallow but they don’t provide this same level of cleanse effectiveness and/or nutritional awesomeness. I have personally had a very rough year with my husband losing his job and a host of other issues (sadly as we all know, tough times often lead to bad eating habits and poor health) but I am now looking toward the future and want to kickstart better days with good nutrition and a positive outlook. What better way to re-start my system, body, outlook and life than by Cooler-Cleanse-ing it out for three days!! I would be so sincerely grateful if I were to win this cleanse – I think it might be the (much-deserved) start of a whole new me! PS This late-breaking-news that very soon they will be extending the delivery zone outside of NYC is especially fantastic… we recently relocated to Boston and I can’t tell you excited I am to have a little piece of (healthy, innovative, awesome) New York available here! I was seriously considering making a pal from the old neighborhood drive me the cleanse 3 hours away 🙂

July 12, 2010 at 3:04 pm (14 years ago)After this past weekend in which I suddenly reverted back to my college days, then realized my body is too old for the late nights, lack of sleep, and alcohol consumption (ha!), I desperately need a detox. I am hearing great things about this product, and I will gladly tweet and Facebook about it to my 750+ friends! ; )

July 12, 2010 at 4:14 pm (14 years ago)Hi! I’ve been a fan of Cooler Cleanse (well, their juices) since I found Juice Generation on the UWS near my house. I get the juices from time to time and not only are they amazing, but the staff there is really great, knows their stuff, etc. I would LOVE to be the winner of cleanse. Three days of amazing juices!
I left my entry on their page in the form of a poem. This is a great contest. Thanks for having it and I’ve enjoyed reading your blog!

July 12, 2010 at 4:17 pm (14 years ago)Sorry – Juice Generation is where they make Cooler Cleanse juices. Just had to clarify!

July 12, 2010 at 4:55 pm (14 years ago)Well, I guess I didn’t read this carefully before. Why do I deserve a free cleanse? I try to take care of myself. I am a devout yoga practitioner and healthy food nut. The two seem so tied in. So though I have a couple of major health challenges, one of them being a very weak immune system, I manage to feel vibrant and healthy most of the time. But every now and then things get away from me. Stress eats away at my health, or my body is put under stress due to antibiotics, which I don’t really advocate but sometimes just NEED. So recently I had to do 21 days of antibiotics, and my system feels all out of whack, but what with mostly being a yoga teacher, I don’t have the $$ at present to try the Cooler Cleanse.
I love the idea of the Custom Cleanse. I always want to add more green to my day, rather than getting a lot of fluffier/sweeter juices. But hey, I gotta have my nut milk in the evening too. What could be more perfect than a cleanse I design myself?
Also, if I love it, I intend to spread the word. I hope to lead a group cleanse with my Upstate students in the fall, and am looking for the right product for the job.

July 12, 2010 at 8:51 pm (14 years ago)Good evening.
I came upon your blog from the Cooler Cleanse Facebook page, that I came upon from a daily email I get from Daily Candy.
I have been interested and wanting to do a cleanse for a long time but have been overwhelmed by all the information and options out there. Cooler Cleanse seemed like just what I needed…simple and effective. I have not been taking as good a care of myself as I should lately. I have an astronomically hypo-active thyroid (TSH in the 300’s for those of you who speak thyroid)that I’m in the process of correcting. That has resulted in me gaining a significant amount of weight and to save you from all the other boring side effects, it’s basically left me feeling ‘lifeless’ in every aspect of myself, from my insides out and everything in between. I have a two year old daughter who has no doubt lost out because she has not had the Mom she deserves. Now that I am on the road getting the help I need medically from my Endocrinologist, I wanted to turn over a new leaf and I thought a cleanse would be the perfect way to go about this.
So that’s my story. Thanks for reading and thank you for the consideration!

July 13, 2010 at 12:41 am (14 years ago)I don’t have time to juice enough to do a full juice cleanse because I am busy running around after an almost 2 year old toddler everyday! I am only 28 but feel like I have aged 10 years in the past 2 between all the sleepless nights, interrupted meals and eating baby’s leftovers so they don’t go to waste! I’m not working now because I am taking care of my baby and so am very very low on cash and need a little TLC and instant gratification that this quick juice cleanse has to offer!!

July 13, 2010 at 6:22 am (14 years ago)I am new to your blog and think it’s great! I also visited and Daily Candy’s article about Cooler Cleanse…mom of three under four, avid runner ( will be competing my fifth half marathon in August), and have been very curious about juice cleansing of late. Faced with the task of gaining and losing approx 50 lbs with each pregnancy, healthy practices, wellness and nutrition have become a way of life for me. Most importantly, I want to be a good role model for my family and want their children to be proud of their strong and healthy mom. I think this is just the push I need to get me hooked…

July 13, 2010 at 9:52 am (14 years ago)Well I don’t know if I deserve this more than anyone else, but $58 per day is pretty steep for me, and I would love to try it! I eat a healthy, balanced diet, exercise a lot, and get enough sleep. However, I have been feeling sluggish and just off, both physically and mentally, for several months. I think there are a number of things that put me off balance – graduate school stress and wedding/honeymoon festivities, and I want to get my energy back. I have been reading about cleansing and think my body might just need a reset. Pick me! 🙂

July 13, 2010 at 10:25 am (14 years ago)I’m probably late … but hey I deserve to win because I’m on a new path to clean up my life and this, for sure, would help.
