Core Fusion with Meghann and Missy

Since Meghann got stuck in NYC for a few extra days because of this week’s snowstorm and was staying at the Gansevoort, it was a perfect opportunity to bring her to Core Fusion with me this morning! There is an exhale spa location in the Gansevoort, so all she had to do was come downstairs.

Of course, that meant I had to travel to the opposite corner of the city in the wee hours of the morning. I wasn’t willing to take the stress of not one but two subways arriving in a decent time at 6 am, so I forked up the cash to cab it over. This is something I rarely do and it was worth it. And this is the reason I don’t usually take class at the Gansevoort. It would be different if it were only one train ride away like the Central Park South, Upper East Side and SoHo locations are. But when there are two trains involved, nothing is certain!

I arrived at the Gansevoort at 6:40, nice and early the way I like to get places. I texted Meghann to let her know I was there and a few minutes later the locker room door opened. I looked up expecting Meghann but it was Missy! Meghann arrived a few minutes later and we took some photos, being the bloggers that we are:

I felt great since I gave myself time to get ready in the morning. Enough time to make coffee and order leggings online. Oops.

I have discovered that coffee is they key to 7 am Core Fusion.

I brought my extra pair of Core Fusion grippy socks so Meghann could have the full experience, although I was considerate and I warned her they haven’t been washed recently. What can I say? I’m going to Queens to do laundry at my mom’s on Saturday. City living, kids!

We went into the studio and I helped Meghann get set up with 3 lb weights and a strap. I showed her how to hang from the stall bar, which is important to use before and after Core Fusion class for a nice back and full body stretch. Since this class was recently added to the schedule, there was only one other person there. It’s funny – if Meghann wasn’t in NYC, Missy and I would have gone to Central Park South and that person would have had a private lesson!

Diana introduced herself to us and I told her about my foot tendinitis. She asked what I’ve been doing during thighs and I told her the teachers have been having me do chair pose and wide V (second position for all you dancers) so I can keep my feet flat on the floor, since I can’t go up on my toes right now.

Class started and the plank was very good. I was very conscious of my form and Diana complimented the entire class on listening to her instructions on having the proper form. Pushups were good, reverse pushups were good. I can’t believe how much easier reverse pushups have become for me over the last month and a half. I used to barely be able to bend my elbows at all and now I can do it!

We did arms and I felt strong again with my 3 and 4 lb weights. It burned but I was able to keep up and do it all.

When we did thighs, Diana had us only do exercises I could participate in! In my other classes since being injured, if the class was doing something I couldn’t, like small V (first position) on their toes, the teacher would come to me and have me do something different. But Diana set the exercises today based on what I could do. I thought that was so nice of her. Of course, no teacher should ever have to do that or feel like they have to. The needs of the class are most important and I will be fine doing anything I can. That said, I thought it was a very nice thing of Diana to do.

We did chair pose, wide V and thigh dancing (there are usually three sets in thighs). During the first two sets, I felt like I’ve really gotten a better grasp on the correct positioning. I tried hard to keep my stomach pulled in and my back flat and straight. It’s not easy, but I’m hoping to make this second nature, or at the very least, as close to second nature as I can get it! Thigh dancing is pretty rare during Core Fusion classes because it is considered one of the most challenging moves. The last time I did it was a few weeks ago. But I was able to hold my own today! Diana even complimented my moves, as I got really into the “dancing” idea of this. Not that it didn’t burn, because it did. But I didn’t collapse out of the position, which is great.

Then we did pushups and after a couple I felt so strong I decided to try for straight legs. And I did it! It was very hard and I couldn’t get myself as low down, but I was able to do real pushups! About 7 in a row. It felt great.

For glutes we did the moves on all fours on the mat. I hadn’t done that in awhile so it was a nice change of pace. The core work we do sitting under the bar was great too, I really felt it in my abs with the way Diana had us move our legs. We did an alternating legs straight in and out and then bent in and out and back to straight. I’m able to lift my legs during bent legs so that really helps me feel the burn.

Instead of another plank at this point we did a movement I haven’t done before, keeping our feet together in front of us and lifting our butt off the floor and back on in a sitting position. Very nice change!

During the C curve (also called the Curl if I haven’t mentioned it) I also felt pretty able to keep up and take my hands off my legs at certain times. I’m definitely improving here. It was very hard though! I glanced over at Meghann to see how she was doing and I could tell it was tough for her as well. As it should be!

We did different leg stretches at the end which was also a nice change of pace. I enjoyed this.

And at the very end of class, the very last song was . . . the theme song from House. Again! Erin played it on Tuesday as the first Music Yoga Flow song and now Diana was playing it as the last song in Core Fusion when we rest in savasana and stretch. I loved hearing it! It felt like a big screen was going to emerge from the ceiling and an episode of House would play. Which, really, would be the perfect end to a Core Fusion class. . One hour of class followed by one hour of House. Fred, what do you think?? 😉

Since there was no big screen, class ended and we went up to Diana to chat a little. In my first post about class in this challenge, I wrote that I like taking Diana’s class because she reminds me of my friend who is a professional dancer. Diana’s hair and body both remind me of Emily. I told Diana about that and it turns out she knew exactly who I was talking about — she knows my friend! They just danced together recently. What a small world!

When class was over I felt so amazing! I feel like I overuse that word here but really, it is the most accurate term to describe how I feel after class. I was in such a great mood and I came to work happy (Maaaaaybe the upcoming 3 day weekend played a part as well). Missy and Meghann both loved the class too. I really wanted Missy to love it since she takes lots of classes and hasn’t had Diana before, and I wanted Meghann to love it since she has never taken class!

Gridiron 4 Mile Race Recap & Blogger Meetups

After my 10K in December, I swore off cold weather races. And then Meghann, who was coming to NYC for an event, tweeted that she signed up for the Gridiron 4 Mile race during her time here. Knowing a meetup was looming, I bit the bullet and signed up as well.

Yesterday, I met Meghann and her mom and brother for lunch at Alice’s Tea Cup. If you can believe it, I’ve lived a few blocks away from there for 4 years and never went inside! So happy Meghann invited me because I absolutely loved it and I’m already itching to go back!

We shared scones to starts — Pumpkin and White Chocolate Cranberry. I actually preferred the White Chocolate one to the Pumpkin! I ate the majority of it since everyone else seemed to like the Pumpkin better. Fine by me!

I’d been salivating over this french toast on the menu: Alice’s Curious French Toast – French toast bites infused with apricot brandy tea, baked bread-pudding style and attacjed with fruit coulis, vanilla creme anglaise and sweet syrupy stuffs.

I don’t know what sweey syrupy stuffs are but whatever it is, I want it.

In the end I decided to go with a half sandwich and soup. I was so cold from my walk there and wanted to be warmed up by Tomato Basil soup, plus this sandwich sounded like the perfect thing to order at a tea house!

It was wonderful! The lemon chive butter was especially amazing. I felt so dainty. I also ordered a pot of Organic Ginger tea. It was fantastic as well and didn’t taste too gingery at all!

So this morning I was up before my alarm excited for the race! I was tweeting with Heather, Meghann and Ashley while getting ready. We were all so excited!

At my last cold weather race I wasn’t dressed warmly enough. During the race I was fine, but standing around before the race was unbearable. I planned better this time. I wore (all items are for running/workout) a long tank top, long sleeved top, jacket, wind stopping vest and a (not running) fleece. I wore running fleece gloves and big regular fleece gloves over them. I wore 2 pairs of running socks. I wore an ear covering headband and a hat over that.

I left my apartment at 8 and walked to the race. I found Meghann and Ashley standing in front of baggage check. I shedded a layer of warmth, my winter coat, and checked it with my bag. We met up with some other bloggers but they left because they were trying to PR and we were running for fun. We wanted to find Melissa and Heather (with Mark!) to run with but couldn’t find either of them.

We headed over to our corral. Well, mine and Ashley’s corral. Meghann is much faster but decided to run with us for a leisurely (for her) race and the fun that comes with talking the entire time. Ashley and I both run 10 minute miles during races.

We still had 20 minutes so we . . . bounced! The 3 of us just bounced up and down while talking. The sun was out and before the race started I was able to remove my fleece and tie it around my race so I could display my number and *maybe* actually appear in a race photo. I would probably have felt silly bouncing like that along but I loved doing it with friends! It warmed us up, except for our hands.

And then the race started. I’m used to starting about 4 minutes after the race begins, by the time my corral gets to the start line, but today the wait was longer than usual for some reason and we started about 8 minutes after the start! Once we were off, things went smoothly. My hands eventually warmed up (I am definitely getting hand warmers for my half marathon)  and I started to feel my toes again. This was my first race without an iPod. We talked the entire time and we listened in on other people’s conversations. It is so interesting to hear what people discuss during a race — typically, other races! I really liked not wearing my iPod, although I would only do it again if I was running with a friend or the race provided entertainment.

Best part about racing with friends? I finally get a RACING ACTION SHOT of myself! (You might know I rarely appear in official race photos). And yes, I realize how selfish I sound. But . . . pictures of ME! YAYYYY!

During the 2nd mile, there were signs splitting up runners into which superbowl team they are rooting for. I don’t know or care about either team, so I asked which side we should run on. Ashley wanted the Colts to win, so we went on that side. We ran over the same type of tracking device at the start and finish lines, and that device tallied the percentage of runners for each team — how fun!

I loved getting to know Meghann and Ashley more and the time really flew by. I know it was an easy pace for Meghann but for me it was basically my normal pace. I definitely got a nice workout but didn’t overdo it at all. I was worried because after my 5 mile run on Tuesday night, I woke up Wednesday with a foot injury. It hurt so much with every step I took. I have tendonitis. I am happy to say my foot felt great! It did not hurt one bit. I was so worried it would ruin my half marathon training, but I really think I will be fine.

At my next race I think I will bring my camera again because I did have fun with it and it didn’t bother me while I was running like I thought it would.

Seeing the finish line is always an amazing thing, although we didn’t sprint. I was so focused on waving at this one race photographer that I didn’t notice 3 on the other side of me until too late! I just want to be in race photos!

My official time is 41:32 for 4 miles, with an average 10:23 pace. This was actually my slowest race ever! Not by much, though. I finished mylast 4 mile race in exactly 40 minutes, and my 10K average was 10:13 miles.

After the race we met up with a big group at Arte Cafe for brunch! I finally got to catch up with Heather and Melissa. Heather was just a few minutes behind us in the race and Melissa was a few ahead. Too bad we missed them! Heather is hilarious, look at her “running” socks:

I also met new bloggers! I don’t have a list of people and their corresponding blogs although I might send out an email so I can get a list together, since they are NYC based like me, runners (like I attempt to be) and I had a great time talking to them all! Every was just so nice. I get intimidated in big groups but everyone was so welcoming today. The food was pretty good too, especially the muffins they gave out when we got there. So good and doughy. I was starving since all I had before the race was a green juice.

I might have taken 2 more muffins home.

I got a mushroom omelet, and it was pretty good. Ashley baked vegan macaroons for everyone and they were wonderful! They had the consistency of cookie dough and the taste of coconut custard pie. Yum!

After brunch we stopped in at Alice’s Tea Cup (a different location than the day before) because Meghann loved her chocolate mint tea yesterday and wanted to buy some. I regret not trying hers when I had the chance! I was tempted to buy some tea but I don’t yet understand how to make loose leaf tea and I just want a better grasp before committing. Yes, I’m nutty and get nervous about strange things. But I live so close to Alice’s that I’ll just pop in when I am all set up to brew the tea at home.

I plan to go back to Alice’s Tea Cup soon anyway. I want to bring all my friends there. It’s just so cute and delicious. And I need to try that french toast. And a brownie.

Anyway, I took the bus back home and had the most amazing 2.5 hour nap. It was much needed!

I had such a great weekend! Racing with friends is so much fun, I hope I get to do that again. I skipped out on 7 am Core Fusion today (Monday) in favor of an extra hour of sleep and it was so worth it. Back this week with more Core Fusion recaps!
